How do I know that God exists?
This question can be answered in 2 parts. First, all people have an inner sense of God. Second, we believe the evidence that is found in Scripture and in nature to show that God exists.
First, everyone has an inner sense of God. Romans 1:19-21 says “what is known about God is plain to them, because made it evident to them… for even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks…” This tells us that even unbelievers know deep in their soul that there is a Creator, God. Proverbs 10:3-4 says “The fool in his heart says there is no God.” And Romans 1:18 says that unbelievers willfully reject God by suppressing the truth about who God is. That is all to say this; everyone was created with an inner sense of God. There are no excuses, He is written on the heart of all mankind.
Second, the evidence that is found in Scripture and nature prove the existence of God. There is clear evidence found in the pages of Scripture that give credible proof to the existence of God. In fact, the Bible everywhere assumes that God exists. The first verse in Genesis 1:1 begins with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The Bible not only proves the existence of God but it also reveals to us the character of God and how to know him personally.
Also, the world gives us abundant evidence to the existence of God. Psalm 19:1-2 says, “The heavens are the glory of God and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.” To look up into the sky and into the night light perceiving the clouds, sun, moon, and stars all of it is a continual declaration of the existence, greatness, power, and glory of God.
Other evidences of God would be the argument that every known thing in the universe has a cause. Therefore, it reasons, the universe itself must also have a cause, and the cause of such a great universe can only be God. Another argument is the ‘moral argument.’ This argument begins from man’s sense of right and wrong, and of the need for justice to be done. It argues that there must be a God who is the source of right and wrong and who will someday bring appropriate justice to all people.
For those evaluating the evidence; everything in Scripture and everything in nature clearly proves that God exists and that he is the powerful and wise creator that Scripture describes him to be.
