How do I find peace?
This is a very good question. It seems as though so many people struggle with wondering how to find peace. That would make sense because of sin and the effects of sin in daily life and in the world. Sin is at the root of all discord and disharmony.
Ultimately, peace comes when you have a proper relationship with God. The Bible tells us that mankind is (by nature) opposed to God (James 4:4). That is to say, we do not naturally have peace with the Creator of the universe. Our sin separates us from having peace with God. Therefore, the first step to having true peace in our life no matter how bad it may seem, is to have peace with our Creator. How does this happen? Rom 5:1 says, “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The only way that we can have peace with God and be reconciled to Him is by faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior ad Lord. When our sin has been dealt with and removed from our hearts, we are no longer in opposition with Him, but we become His child (John 1:14, Eph. 1:5), and his friend. God is no longer our enemy, but our friend.
When we have peace with God, we can have peace about the circumstances in the world. Our circumstances, trials, difficulties, and anxiety are now placed in the hands of our Sovereign Lord who will help us to walk by faith trusting that He is in control. Philippians 4:6-7 tells what we need to do to receive the peace that can only come from God. “Be anxious for nothing, but in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
By casting our cares, anxiety, and struggles on Christ, God will surround his children with a peace that can only come from Him.
